Butternut and pine, original brown and red stained finish, slanted breadboarded lid, opening to a two-section interior, stained chrome yellow, brass hinges, dovetailed case, hinged top back section with two interior boxes (one on either side) for ink bottles (in original black painted finish), and a long middle section with light green papered bottom, and hand-fashioned brass arm holders for quill pens, (two pens are with the desk), 2 1/2″ to 1 1/2″ h, 23″ w, 17″ d.
This desk box is similar in concept to a desk made by Orren Haskins in 1831, with hinged back section for ink and pens; (see Shaker Furniture Makers, Grant and Allen, 1989, p. 93).
Purchased from Jeannette Brothers in 1949 for $10
