Butternut, original ochre stained varnish finish, finely dovetailed case, breadboarded and hinged lid with cast brass handle, supported when open with an oil cloth strap, colored lithograph under lid “Winter Landscape”, 4 1/2″ h, 14″ l, 10″ d, lift-out butternut sectioned tray with many sewing articles, tools, buttons, measuring tape with initials “C.H.S.” (Cora Helena Sarles, Canterbury, N.H.), under storage compartment with knitting needles, orange pincushion, large blue strawberry emery, includes original key, photograph of Sister Adelaide Patterson knitting with a similar sewing box on the sewing desk, and a photograph postcard of Sister C.H. Sarles at her easel painting a Canterbury landscape, a box of ribbons of initialed tape in red “C.H.S.” for Sister Cora Sarles, and a rare pink mid-century button with hand-painted red and white flowers and leaves by Sister Sarles, 1″ dia.
