Poplar, original grain painted finish, bird’s-eye and tiger maple, “TAPES.” in black stencil on front, lift lid, dovetailed and symmetrically nailed construction, hand blocked blue and gold wallpaper under lid, red stained interior, wear inside lip, Canterbury, NH, c. 1840, (note: tapes were used for binding fabric as well as for seating chairs), 4″ h, 14 1/4″ l, 9 1/4″ d.
