Description
Maple and pine, four fingers, (top finger is incorporated into the rim as a reinforcement), an exceptional woodworking composition, original light yellow/red varnish stained finish, alligatored, overall excellent condition, Watervliet or New Lebanon, NY, c. 1835-1840, (note: these round boxes were made to relieve the Shakers from the habit of smoking tobacco; although called a Sister’s box, it was probably used by a brother at his work), 3 1/4″ h, 7 3/8″ dia, (ex. Upton collection, Troy, NY).
