Lot 50: Three-Drawer Blanket Chest

Pine, original bittersweet red painted finish, single board pine top with applied moldings, interior with tapered pine lift lid support on left, three graduated drawers with molded lips and dovetailed, all on a dovetailed bracket base with molding, oval steel escutcheon with original key, Canterbury, NH, c. 1840, 37 1/2″ h, 41 3/4″ w, 17 3/4″ d.

Holes were originally drilled for two pulls on each drawer but appear not to have been used, as the Shaker cabinetmaker seemingly chose to use a single pull instead, giving the chest a centered aesthetic quality.

Purchased at Canterbury, NH in 1951 for $100

(Dr. McCue’s Journal Entry #168)

Estimate: $10,000-15,000
