Both attributed to James Hosley Whitcomb (1806-1849, a deaf mute), one with pine frame in early green painted finish, oval aperture, “Rev. Joel Wheeler”, family history on reverse, 2 3/4″ x 2 1/4″ (sight), (ex. Hillary Underwood Auction, Sotheby’s, lot 122, October 8, 1983); and the other a hollow cut silhouette of a gentleman, watercolor red speckled collar and fancy vest, in a pine reeded frame, (purchased from Paul and Karen Wendhiser, Ellington, CT, June 12, 2003), 3 3/4″ x 2 5/8″ (sight); (ex. Fertig collection).
