Lot 82: 19th C. Oval Ditty Box

Sailor carved, whalebone and ivory, made for a wife or sweetheart, with hardwood top inlaid with four hearts and connected with a diamond, pine base, intricately nailed with whalebone pegs used to secure the sides to the top and bottom, small piece of rim at lid missing in rear, otherwise excellent condition, purchased from an Ocean Drive estate in Cohasset, MA (see E.N. Flayderman, Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders: Whales and Whalemen, p. 230), 4″ h, 7 3/4″ w, (ex. Dr. Oscar and Lois Hollander collection, Falmouth, MA).
