Letter sent by Union Officer Alex Gardiner to his friend “Ira Colby Jr. Esq. Claremont, NH.”, the letter was sent from Harpers Ferry, VA on August 8, 1864, written “in the field” at the “headquarters of the 14th NH volunteers”, Gardiner states he was in command of four companies of soldiers, 5″ x 2 7/8″.
