Plate from President Ulysses S. Grant’s White House china, 9 1/4″ dia. [In 1869 Mrs. Grant ordered “State Dinner China” from J.W. Butler & Bros. She selected 587 pieces of china, to be made by Haviland & Company of Limoges, France. The plates featured 24 different handpainted floral scenes, and a gold painted “Coat of Arms”, featuring an eagle with shield. The plate has a small chip and a portion of the gold “Coat of Arms” shield is missing.] Provenance: The plate was chipped, removed from the set due to damage, and given to a housekeeper. The plate was purchased from a direct descendant of the housekeeper. Two old photo cards dated June 19, 1885, from “Barrett, 28 Ann Street, NY” exhibit “General U.S. Grant” and the daughter of the housekeeper, along with family and staff, shortly before his death. A third cabinet card of Grant and two etchings of Grant from books are included.
