19th c. oil on canvas, showing a family of quail in a landscape setting, the male is keeping watch while the female and 11 chicks forage, signed l.r. in red “A.F. Tait, N.Y. 1855.” (Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, 1819-1905), in the original carved and gilded frame with arched opening, overall good condition with some inpainting in the sky, canvas stenciled “Williams & Stevens, Broadway, NY”, original label on back “De Norp…Boston”, 20″ x 24″ (sight), 27″ x 31 1/4″ (frame), (ex. Milliken estate, Duxbury, MA). [Note: This painting was chosen by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) for one of his large folio lithograph prints of 1856 and titled it “The Cares of a Family”. This print was chosen in 1932 by a dozen collectors of Currier and Ives as one of the top 50 of the Currier and Ives 7,000 prints.
